FEAST II style, test 15 of 15

Radar simulation

Plan the traffic along fixed routes while memory codes, maths tasks, gauges and radio calls compete for your attention.

Time: 6–10 min · free · in the style of FEAST II (RADAR and MULTI-PASS) and AT-SAT Air Traffic Scenarios

You are the controller of a sector with one airport, NORRVIK. Time runs four times faster than in real life. Your job is to get every aircraft where it is going without any two aircraft coming too close to each other.

The rules

  • Routes: the sector has fixed airways, the light lanes on the radar. Every aircraft follows its route along the airways to its exit point and never leaves it on its own.
  • Plan ahead: look at where the routes cross and which aircraft will get there at the same time at the same level. Solve it with level and speed long before they meet.
  • Vector only when you must: a heading takes the aircraft off its airway. It costs points, double if no conflict was coming, and the aircraft must go back to its route afterwards.
  • Separation: at least 5 NM horizontally or 1,000 ft vertically. Otherwise both aircraft turn red and you lose points.
  • Accept: new aircraft call you before they enter. Accept them before they cross the sector boundary.
  • Overflights and departures: must leave the sector via their exit point and at their exit level (the "exit" line in the label). Hand over within 20 NM of the exit point.
  • Arrivals to NRV: down to FL100 or below at no more than 250 knots, hand over within 20 NM of NRV.
  • Departures: wait on the ground at NRV. Clear them for take-off within 45 seconds.
  • Easy: the radar circles where two aircraft will meet, ahead of time, and shows how long is left. On Normal and Hard you have to spot it yourself.

At the same time

  • Readbacks: the pilot reads back your instruction, sometimes wrongly. Press Wrong readback on the message, or the pilot will fly the wrong value.
  • Requests: answer within 30 seconds, either by giving the pilot what they ask for or by pressing Unable.
  • Memory code: a code is shown for a few seconds. Type it in when you are asked.
  • Gauges: click any gauge whose needle moves into the red.
  • Maths tasks and radar questions: sometimes the radar is hidden and you answer from memory, for example which two aircraft will meet first if you do nothing.

How to read the label

SAS412
350↓240
46 LUDDE
exit LUDDE 240
  • SAS412 callsign. Click it to select the aircraft.
  • 350 ↓ 240 current level, arrow, cleared level. Click 240 to change the level.
  • 46 ground speed in tens of knots (460). Click it to change the speed.
  • LUDDE next point on the route, or H090 if the aircraft has been vectored. Click it to see the route, give a vector or send the aircraft back to its route.
  • exit LUDDE 240 where and at what level the aircraft must leave your sector.

Controls

  • Click an aircraft or its callsign to select it. The selected aircraft's route is shown in coral on the radar. The buttons on the right do the same as the fields in the label.
  • Vector with the mouse: choose Vector and click the spot on the radar the aircraft should turn towards. Resume route sends the aircraft direct to the next point on its route.
  • Right-click and drag on the radar to measure distance and bearing.
  • Keyboard: type in the command line, for example SAS412 240, S250, H090 (vector), ROUTE (resume route), ACC (accept), HO (hand over), START. Without a callsign, the command applies to the selected aircraft.
