What FEAST I is
FEAST (First European Air Traffic Controller Selection Test) is the EUROCONTROL test battery. FEAST I consists of cognitive tests and an English test. According to EUROCONTROL it takes between 2.5 and 4 hours including breaks. At LFV in Sweden it takes about three hours and is done in a computer room in Malmö or Stockholm, 12 to 15 people at a time.
The English test is called ELICIT (English Language Listening & Comprehension) and measures listening and comprehension. Spoken English is not tested in FEAST.
Which abilities are measured
LFV, one of the organisations that uses FEAST, writes that the tests measure, among other things:
- decision making
- memory
- multitasking, doing several things at once
- perceptual speed
- three-dimensional (spatial) ability
Good to know
- EUROCONTROL recommends taking FEAST only once, and LFV follows that.
- Each organisation decides its own pass mark. EUROCONTROL does not own the results and cannot release them.
- EUROCONTROL has a free practice platform that covers almost all FEAST I tests. The account is valid for six months. EUROCONTROL says it is the only practice it endorses and that other practice programs can be misleading.
How to use the tests here
Our tests are our own tasks, not copies of FEAST. They train the same kinds of abilities: memory (digits and letters), numbers (number series, mental arithmetic), perceptual speed (scanning, coordinates), attention (vigilance, strip monitoring, reaction), spatial ability (cubes, headings and angles) and English. Use them as a warm-up, and do EUROCONTROL’s own practice too.
